Top 20 Reactive Dog Breeds
in the UK

Reactivity can affect any breed, but certain dogs are more predisposed due to their genetics, working instincts, and sensitivity. Understanding your dog's breed characteristics is the first step towards helping them.

What is Dog Reactivity?

Reactivity is an over-reaction to a stimulus — whether that's another dog, a person, a vehicle, or a sound. It manifests as barking, lunging, growling, or shutting down, and it's almost always rooted in either fear, frustration, or an over-developed prey or protective drive.

Reactivity is not aggression, and it is not a life sentence. With the right understanding, the right techniques, and consistent practice, the vast majority of reactive dogs can make significant, life-changing progress.

At PPT, we work with reactive dogs of all breeds and backgrounds. Our approach is always science-based, compassionate, and tailored to your individual dog.

Common Signs of Reactivity

Barking, lunging, or growling at triggers
Pulling hard on the lead towards or away from stimuli
Freezing, stiffening, or refusing to move
Excessive scanning and hypervigilance on walks
Inability to settle or focus in stimulating environments
Snapping or air-snapping when approached
Excessive vocalisation in the car or at windows

"Does this sound like your dog? You're not alone — and there is a way forward."
